The video surveillance market is in transition. In addition to the continuing shift from analog to IP video, resolutions of 4K (and even greater) are available, and required data retention times are longer. And the channel must respond.

Wayne Arvidson, vice president of video surveillance solutions at Quantum, says his company’s partners are learning to take a different approach. “Storage has always been the last thing in the buying process. And integrators are used to that being the last spec for a system. But storage is most important — instead of starting with cameras, VMS [video management system], applications, and OS, it’s better to consider capacity and build the solution on top of that.”

He says Quantum partners are discovering a demand for the capability to hold onto data longer — not just for litigation, but also for Big Data analytics. Analytics are becoming more sophisticated, and businesses are integrating cameras with other systems to mine the business value of data. “Businesses want that data to be accessible. Video is just another feed into the Big Data funnel,” Arvidson says.
